Great escape
Reviewed on 2024-01-26 by Loren N. , Jackson, WY USThe property is exactly as described and is perfectly equipped for a warm weather escape.Great kitchen and two private bedrooms with full en suite baths. There are 3 decks each with a slightly different sun, wind, and whale watching views. Beautiful daily sunrises, whales as close as 100m from the decks. Very private and minutes from the black sand beach.
Only issue was the neighbors barking dogs. They bark at everything morning, evening, and the middle of the night. We had to close things on the north side of the home to block the noise...
Property is highly recommended for a remote getaway.
We just spent 8 wonderful relaxing nights at the Jewel Box and it was a jewel. One clarification is that this property is offered by Hawaii Life real estate brokers and NOT VRBO. The did all communication, service, contract, and fees. Forget VRBO.

The property is exactly as described and is perfectly equipped for a warm weather escape.Great kitchen and two private bedrooms with full en suite baths. Secluded Getaway
Reviewed on 2023-11-14 by , Santa Fe, NM United StatesThe location of this house made us feel like we were on a ship. It was very clean and comfortable and well-equipped, though the dryer was not working (Hawaii Life refunded $25 per day). The property manager was responsive and made some great suggestions about local farmer's markets. It's a long drive to grocery stores and restaurants, so be prepared to cook.

Reviewed on 2023-06-30 by Gina B. , Las Vegas, NV United StatesP.S. If you fly into Hilo, don't shop for groceries at the big chain stores. With a cheaper-than-a-rental car from Turo, we headed to the Jewel Box, stopping for groceries on the way. It's definitely off the beaten path, but that's just what we needed after a harrowing few months at work. Listening to the waves crashing right below you while watching the sunset was simply breathtaking. The property is spotless and incredibly well-maintained. Beautiful kitchen, grill, laundry - all the amenities were included. We hope to stay again!

P.S. If you fly into Hilo, don't shop for groceries at the big chain stores. Another Relaxing Stay at Jewel Box
Reviewed on 2023-06-09 by Kathy W. , Kamuela, HI USWe spent our 4th stay at Jewel Box celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and again had a wonderful time! The house was very clean and comfortable, in a quiet neighborhood (except for the welcome sound of the waves right outside the back door!). We prepared simple meals in the well-equipped kitchen and got takeout from Kaleo's and Nings Thai, located in Pahoa town, about 9 miles (20 minutes)from the house. We felt so privileged to be able to stay a whole week! We will definitely come back as often as we can.

Beautiful Retreat
Reviewed on 2023-03-19 by Traci H. , Juneau, AK USAmazing view and the sounds of the waves crashing and birds chirping is paradise. The home is remote but that was perfect for our stay. Sunrise and whales
Reviewed on 2023-01-18 by chris f. , white salmon, WA USThis is a great location for watching the sunrise and watching the whales go by. It may be a bit remote for some but was perfect for us. Kitchen was nicely outfitted although a few bowls for soup or cereal would have been appreciated. Recommend getting groceries in Hilo as the store in Pahoa is really expensive, even by Hawaiian standards. Good roadside produce stands along the highway coming into Pahoa. We are very likely to be back here in the future.
40th Anniversary
Reviewed on 2022-10-08 by Glenn W. , Jacksonville, FL United StatesMy wife and I traveled to Hawaii for our 40th anniversary celebration. We Island hopped to Hawaii from Oahu and wanted a beach front home to stay in. When I saw the Jewel Box on line I thought it would be perfect. It was, right on the ocean with the sound of the waves the entire time. The area was very quiet and felt very safe. The Jewel box is a very well presented property with great amenities and a perfect setting.

Great Oceanfront House to Relax
Reviewed on 2022-05-16 by BRUCE L. , Cincinnati, OH United StatesWe were very pleased with this rental house and its responsive caretaker. The location is fantastic, with waves washing and often crashing into the ~25 ft cliffs, both soothing and dramatic. There are decks at both the living area and upper floor bedroom levels. The main one has a table and chairs, as well as a comfortable loveseat to relax with a glass of wine! The property was well-equipped and clean, with a deluxe kitchen area and spacious bathrooms. Thoughtfully stocked with paper products and some kitchen supplies! Nicely furnished, and beds were pretty comfortable. There was plenty of closet space, but no chest of drawers in either bedroom (there's a table with 3 large baskets underneath in the main floor bedroom). Note that this house doesn't have A/C, but has ceiling and free-standing fans and screened sliding windows which provide good ventilation (the latches could use some work). It's about an hour to Volcanoes National Park, and ~45 minutes to Hilo, with basics available in nearby Pahoa. We like the non-commercial, non-congested appeal of this little community of nice homes with attractive gardens. We'd definitely stay here again.

Crushing waves
Reviewed on 2020-10-17 by , WAIKOLOA, HI United StatesThe house was very accommodating, especially the patio with its view towards the ocean. After having sat down on the cozy patio furniture once, we did not want to leave again for three days... The light trade winds made it so comfortable sitting outside a glass of wine listening to the crushing waves and reading a good book. We also enjoyed the modern and inviting decor inside.
If there is anything to suggest to enhance a future stay for another guest, then maybe this:
Both propane containers for the BBQ were empty upon arrival. As we did not BBQ it didn't matter much to us though but it might be important to other guests.
Some pots and pans stored in the kitchen drawers were dirty when we got there and we had to thoroughly clean them before using them for the first time.
Other than that we had a great time!
We had an amazing and relaxing time. Coming from Waikoloa it almost felt as if we had travelled to another island, even though it was just two hours away. We are in the land of Kona coffee after all...Oh and the black sand beach is incredible but they are not kidding when they say it is clothing optional! Spectacular ocean views await you from every level of this professionally decorated vacation home. Located on the Eastern side of the Big Island, The Jewel Box is a traditional Hawaiian bungalow remodeled with your comfort and luxury in mind with beautiful hardwood floors, Silestone counters & Dal tiles throughout. Ceiling fans and trade winds cool every room, while floor to ceiling windows feature amazing ocean views. Sit back and enjoy the relaxing tranquility on lanais on each level. Decorated in vintage Hawaiiana with modern conveniences, The Jewel Box welcomes you with comfort, style, and well-considered amenities for your stay.
Main Level: The main floor features an open concept kitchen, dining area, and living room, plus bedroom and adjoining full bath with a large tiled shower. A covered lanai runs the full length of the house with lounge chairs and outdoor dining area. The kitchen is well-equipped with full-sized refrigerator/freezer, gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, as well as complete cookware and dining settings. The living room has a flat screen TV with streaming, DVD player and Apple TV. Free 1 Gig High Speed Wireless Internet access available.
Top Level: The top level is a master suite and full bathroom with shower and a private deck with lounge chairs and a sweeping view of the ocean.
Local Attractions:
The Jewel Box is located in the Puna District, located directly on the scenic Puna coastline, with a breathtaking view of the Pacific, and a short walk to Kehena Black Sand beach. This area on the eastern shore stretches from the ocean to the 4,000 foot summit of Kilauea volcano. Because it is directly on the ocean, The Jewel Box has the benefit of being close to great hiking areas nearby while experiencing fresh air quality provided by the trade winds off the Pacific. A few blocks out the front door is the Red Road, one of the most scenic and renowned drives in all of Hawaii, accessing black sand beaches, dense rain forest, and other picturesque vistas. Visitors are likely to spot whales in season, and turtles and spinner dolphins year round. And because of its vast wilderness, the area remains a breeding ground for many birds, including endangered Hawaiian hawks that are frequently spotted near The Jewel Box. A short walk from The Jewel Box is Kehena Black Sand Beach, a secluded (clothing optional) beach, hidden from view from the roadway.
A few miles north, you’ll find our newest black sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park aka Pohoiki, home to the best surfing in Puna! This beach was created during the 2018 eruption.
Two miles south in Kalapana is Uncle Roberts and a bazaar-style market every Wednesday night which hosts live music, and features local artists & handcrafts booths and tons of amazing food vendors. They do have a bar, but you can also BYOB. Get there early to reserve a spot to sit!
Nearby in Pahoa, take a stroll through this old mill town with its rows of clapboard shops along a boardwalk, local restaurants and a bakery. During the weekend, the Makuu Farmers Market on Hwy 130 just outside of Pahoa features lots of fresh produce and fruit, roasted mac nuts, honeys, and more local food and art vendors.
