Kehena Treetop Bungalow [1]
Great little Hawaiian cottage
Reviewed on 2025-02-07 by , Dunrobin, ON CAWe loved this little house - loved the coqui frogs, the rain forest, well equipped kitchen. We purposely chose it to be further away from the Hilo busy area but it’s still close enough to Pahoa if you have a car so you can pick up groceries etc. Close to a small black sand beach. Also good for visit the nearby beaches/shops of Hilo if you have a car. And don’t forget the Volcano National Park. We were lucky to be there when the volcano was active and got to view the eruptions - amazing!

Felt like home!
Reviewed on 2023-05-16 by , CHicago, IL USWhat a lovely bungalow, in a nice quiet neighborhood close to beaches and to Hilo. It's a bit of a drive from town but thoroughly enjoyed being far from tourist traps and resorts. The local wildlife song of frogs and birds lulled us to sleep every night. Very timely response from the property manager as well when we couldn't figure out the hot water. Would def stay again!
In the Trees alongside traffic
Reviewed on 2023-03-24 by Honora K. , Madison, WI USThe house was lovely, in the trees as described, with all the amenities. We were a little disappointed that it was right on a fairly busy road on one side and very close to the neighbor on the other. The black sand beach right up the way and that was wonderful, otherwise not too much in the area as places to eat. Bring your own to fix. We had to shorten our trip as the rains were coming down in torrents. Sorry that was the case. Loved the outside shower

Didn't want to leave!
Reviewed on 2022-01-26 by Angela D. , Loxley, AL USWe thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kehena Treetop Bungalow! The house was the perfect size for us and it had everything we could possibly need. We were surprised that it didn’t have air conditioning but we found that we didn’t need it. With all of the windows open, there was a cool breeze flowing through. The beds were comfortable and we really liked the sheets, blankets and pillows. We also appreciated the beach towels and extra thick bath towels. I spent most of my time relaxing in the hammock. The only drawback to this property is that we had to leave!

Could use some repairs
Reviewed on 2021-12-18 by , Walnut Creek, CA USOverall, this was a sweet stay. It's a few blocks from a walk on the lava beach and 5 mins from a black sand beach. A few much-needed repairs would help--the water heater alarm had to be overridden every 24 hours or the hot water shut off, several windows didn't function and the armoire door was broken. It was also very loud at night, with bedrooms right on the road. The property manager, Jolanta, was amazing and did her best to make me comfortable despite the issues. With earplugs and a flexible attitude, it was a good enough place to stay. Would be better with some maintenance.

Cute place on the main road, not the best management company
Reviewed on 2021-03-04 by Monte D. , Denver, CO USReally cute house in the jungle of Puna. It is on the main road in the area and even though you're in the middle of nowhere, there is a higher than expected amount of road noise late in the night. I have mixed feelings about the management company. The woman that manages the physical property, Jolanta, was great, very responsive and friendly, but the reservation side of the company was lacking. After sending them my Neg COVID result, they never responded with my check in info and property address, so I had to ping them repeatedly the day I was arriving to get it, causing unneeded stress. Also, there were a few days that I didn't have hot water and they didn't offer any refund for those nights. I'd likely not stay here again.
Amazing secluded oasis
Reviewed on 2020-03-05 by , Black Diamond, AB CAWe really enjoyed the tree top bungalow. The frog and other nature sounds made it feel like you were staying in a jungle. The location was remote, which was what we wanted, yet a close driving distance to so much fun and interesting stuff! Or only issue was the hot water wasn’t hot but the property manager did her best quickly to try to resolve it.

Treehouse
Reviewed on 2020-02-19 by Rhonda R. , Bellingham, WA USThis rental really “made” our trip to Kehena special. The tropical flowers, black sand beach and peacefulness of the area was fantastic but this treehouse was something special. Being able to look out every window and be surrounded by trees gave a unique feeling of privacy. The house has an old Hawaiian feel with the beautiful wood floors, windows and hammock on the lanai. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed.

Kehena Treetop Paradise!
Reviewed on 2020-01-15 by Tracy D. , TEATICKET, MA USThis bungalow was perfect for me and my two adult daughters. This was home base for 10 days and we traveled all over the island, always loving coming back to the sounds, scents and feel of this home. Kitchen provisions were great and the location was sweet - many walks to the beach and cliffs to watch the daily sunrises! Would highly recommend this remote bungalow.

cozy house in the jungle
Reviewed on 2018-04-12 by Andy S. , Wellsville, UT United Stateswe spent 4 nights here in April. The area is very green and lush and gets over 100 inches per year. The Unit was clean and cozy. The kids really enjoyed playing with all the toys that the unit comes with and was one of the reasons we chose it. Due to the location, there are more bugs than other places, but not bad. One complaint was the need for more lighting. They have track lights in the kitchen and could easily add a few more to lighten up the place. Overall a good experience and an interesting part of the island.

Charming Treehouse

Clean and spacious for 4 adults. the description was accurate but a little farther from the beach than I expected but close enough to all the local amenities. Check out the lava flow and snorkeling in the warm ponds, nothing like it!! Lots of produce growing in the neighborhood and geckos are frequent visitors. We loved it!
Charming bungalow off the tourist track
Reviewed on 2017-12-26 by Nicola M. , London, XX United KingdomThis was the perfect get away. The property was charming and equipped with all we needed in a stunning location with lots to explore nearby. The Kapoho tide pools, champagne ponds and Uncle Roberts in Kalapana are all well worth a visit. It really is away from it all, so I recommend getting all your groceries in Hilo on arrival. A couple of other tips: take a lot of insect repellent! Also the two bedrooms are only separated by a glass sliding door and curtains and there is no sound insulation between the two, so worth taking into consideration if privacy is important- though it was fine for us.
