Welcome to Birdsong!

This impeccably serene off-grid Studio surrounded by lush, tropical rain forest will bring you back time and again. Located just north of Hilo, the Studio stands alone for your quiet enjoyment and retreat on a family estate and farm on acreage with a shared saline pool & hot tub for your use from 7am to Sunset. The view is spectacular! From the bedroom you can look out across the lanai that drops 250 feet almost straight down (NOT for the faint of heart). There are many fruit trees from which you are welcome to gather, including citrus, banana, papaya, avocado and more. It is truly a unique location, one of the only heavily forested pieces of coastline north of Hilo left that is both close to the ocean and close to town, yet the views and sounds make it feel like you’re a million miles from civilization.

The Studio has everything one could possible need for their vacation of solitude to reset your clock and get away from the hustle and bustle of the Big City. The master bedroom (the only bedroom) has a Queen bed and views from every window. The lanai off the master has an unobstructed view of the gulch and valley below, with towering palm trees rising, and seating for 2 – perfect for morning coffee or tea. The sounds of the river and waterfalls are simply indescribable. A full kitchen with modern appliances and accoutrements is just waiting for you to prepare and cook every wonderful island meal you can dream of, with seating for two staring at the ocean, blue. The bathroom features a beautiful stand-up river stone shower, perfect for one, or even two. The home also has all the amenities one might need including a washer/dryer and basic internet access.

There are hiking trails and waterfalls to explore, too! Must be sure-footed and a healthy, smart-hiking type.

Please Note: This entire estate and farm are completely off-grid and powered by solar, Wifi may go down due to weather. Please expect to share your space with some of our friendly Hawaii geckos, lizards, birds, and plants.

The Birdsong VRBO is the ultimate getaway in the middle of a tropical rainforest with fantastic views from the wall to wall windows. We were lulled to sleep by the roaring of the waterfall and the twilight symphony of birdsong. We awoke to ocean views and more birdsong. We loved every minute, including the scenic drive through the tropical rainforest from the highway to the property! We even caught a glimpse of wild pigs! The interior was quirky and charming and perfect for the two of us. We will be back!!!

Birdsong is a beautiful little cottage set among the trees and foliage of a tropical forest with a view as far as the ocean. The cottage has lots of windows and light. Screens on all the windows except the door to the lanai. It has a well equipped kitchen, lots of towels as well as beach equipment for 2 people. It was very clean ad well maintained. The only downside was the the internet which was down except for one day. This may have been the very wet and stormy weather that we experienced for the 3 days we were there! I would also like to suggest that the mattress be replaced as it is soft and lumpy!
The manager Jolanta sent us excellent driving directions to Birdsong as well as checkout instructions.
We would certainly recommend renting this property for a vacation in the forest but close to beaches.

We knew it was off grid. Had a couple of power outages but they took care of it quickly. Internet was not reliable. It wasn't a problem for us. We did not use the pool/hot tub. Check other reviews for that. We came for the view and jungle feeling. That was great. The location was very convenient. We enjoyed our stay.

The cottage is beautiful with a sunrise view of the ocean. There is a waterfall hidden in the jungle near the cottage that provides a pleasant accompaniment to the bird songs during the day and the frogs and toads at night. The cottage is clean and well designed. We absolutely loved our four nights there. There was an issue with the water on the first day, but the owner and management company fixed it the same day.

Enjoyed our time at Birdsong. The guesthouse was clean; the kitchen was equipped for basic meal prep. Not a great design for the bathroom shower; the floor never dried (ended up putting down towels outside the shower). Appreciated the beach items that were provided. Floor to ceiling windows offered incredible views, though took a little to get used to the lack of privacy and the early morning sunlight. We loved the location, which was close to Hilo and Volcano National Park as well as other sights/activities, but secluded and private so we could relax and unwind on the lanai with only the sounds of nature and views of the ocean and jungle. We never used the pool or hot tub. They are shared with the main house, and honestly, using them would have felt awkward and intrusive. When we walked down to check them out, we could hear people in the main house talking and listening to music. Suggestions, bring an eye mask for sleeping or you'll be awake with the sun especially on cloudless days; wine drinkers, there is no corkscrew that we could find (used a butter knife so all was well).

Superb. The setting and placement of the cottage location was perfection. Jeanna at Hawaii Life was readily available. GB the owner was super helpful and friendly yet private. The view and setting is hard to beat. We live in San Diego and love our city but it has been an adjustment to be home. Ahhh dreaming of being back at Birdsong again and again...just the drive down the road to the cottage alone was great. Moon and Turtles Restaurant, Turtles at Richardson Beach, Uncle Ed’s Nighttime Market, Waipio Valley and Hamakua Cacao and Chocolate Farm. Mahalo Hawaii Life!!! Tim and Ed �� We love Hilo!!!

The moment we drove through the gates we felt the magic of Bird Song. We especially enjoyed the seclusion yet still close to Hilo and other sights. The bungalow has beautiful views and the sounds of the ocean and wildlife serenaded us by day and lulled us into deep sleep by night. The cold pool is perfect for lap swimming and the hot pool for relaxing. We’d definitely come back.

Beautiful view of jungle and ocean. Loved the sounds of nature of birds, Coqui frogs, rushing river, wind and rain. The cottage was earthy and welcoming to come home to each day of our visit. The resident cats were such a nice touch of a "being at home" feel.

The ocean views from the deck are incredible! Only 10 minutes to downtown Hilo with its shopping, restaurants and beaches (and a great farmers/flea market for reasonably priced produce and souveniers). A real bonus was an incredible botanical garden just a short walk down the driveway which is also close to some great secluded public ocean access. This property is in a rain forest, so be prepared for a little wet most days, but also lots of sun most days.

Owner provides lots of comfy towels for bath and beach use as well as snorkling gear.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful. Our 25th Anniversary trip was very relaxing and beautiful. The property is very private with amazing views! We enjoyed the sites and sounds of nature. The cabin is right above a waterfall. The local birds, frogs and lizards added to the jungle feel. We spent many days at the pool and enjoying the island.

We woke to a breathtaking view ! This treehouse cottage is tucked away in the jungle and off the beaten path . It comes with a very friendly cat , some beautiful geckos , and two adorable goats ! This tree house was the explanation point on our three week , four island adventure !

The flat is very nice and well kept and good quality of furniture. We liked it but it is worth to mention that it is like to sleep into a rain forest so you have to be prepared for it. I would suggest just a light outside the flat for when the people return late in the night.

Enjoyed every minute of our stay at Birdsong! Stunning views across rainforest, to the ocean and sunrise, could see glimpses of the waterfall directly below and heard the water rushing underneath. Place was clean and looks to be fairly new. Loved the beach pebble covered shower and bath, which was also very clean. Also well stocked—plenty of towels, beach towels, food wrap and disposable containers, and even snorkels. Sad to leave, and will return to stay on our next trip back to the Hilo area!

Had a great stay here. The house is very clean, private and thoughtfully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We appreciated the extra bath towels and beach towels. The views and sound of the waterfall are so enchanting, we enjoyed spending the late afternoons and early evenings on the deck, taking in all the nature around us. They do provide earplugs for those sensitive sleepers (like my husband) because the waterfall and the froggies are surprisingly loud! The location is great. Snorkeling at Richardson Bay with the beautiful fish and sea turtles was one of our favourite outings! It's easy to get to the volcano to spend a day hiking and exploring the area. Don't miss the Sunday market at Pahoa and save room for lunch! Great place! We stayed for 4 nights and could have easily stayed longer.

Birdsong is a great getaway on the Big Island. It is secluded and has great ocean views from the bedroom. The drive to the cottage is dark, but once you arrive, you feel like you’re in a private retreat. The cottage has some quirks, but the laundry in the unit is great to have. It’s a short drive to Hilo and Akaka falls. The owner is very friendly, as are his goats and (especially one of) his cats. The nights are filled with tropical sounds, including the stream in the gulch below, which leads to the botanical gardens a short walk or drive away.

This property is very secluded and private, we saw the owner a few times but it was like you were in a little cottage in the middle of the rain forest. We picked lychee, avocado and this was Christmas week !! The sound of the stream and waterfall was very soothing but the forest sounds at night were incredible.
This is a one bedroom not a studio like they say in the advertising. We thought it was amazing but don't forget your bug spray there are some mosquitoes.
Perfect place to explore the rest of the island but far enough from Hilo to feel secluded

Perfect. Just perfect. Small. Cozy. View extraordinaire I want to live there!!
We love Hilo ! I do not know why the store
Fronts have so much vacency. If that's a direct result of the volcano? I do not no. But it sure looks all ready for a little revival. A LOw Low roar would be great
However we Love that the town has remained so rural. This little house is Awesome as is the owner. A lucky man and we thank
Him for sharing his little bungalow !! Nothing will disappoint!!

This is a unique property. In the "jungle" overlooking the ocean. Access to a beautiful swimming pool.

If you are looking for a Hawaii experience that doesn't include being around resort tourists, this is the place for you! We loved the privacy and waking up to a gorgeous sunrise every morning. Birdsong is surrounded by lush vegetation, so be prepared for the sounds of birds and was great! Also there are several cats on the grounds, which do make their presence known as well as super sweet goats. We enjoyed slipping them some snacks now and then! The convenience of this home made our exploration of the island easy, and Jeana (property manager) was very responsive to our questions.

Yes there were geckos, yes there were mosquitos, yes the place could use a ceiling fan, and no I couldn't get the internet to work but.......the view and property make up for all this. If you stay here you must check out the stream and waterfall on the property, absolutely gorgeous. The property was clean and adequately appointed. Lighting an insect repellent candle provided adequate protection from mosquitos. Easy quick drive to Hilo. I'll stay here again in a heartbeat.
