And, don’t miss old Pahoa town, just a short 4 mile drive from the hale where you will find the original boardwalks that date back to the late 1800’s when this sleepy little town was king in the sugar plantation days. There is great dining in this little town with Italian, Thai, Chinese and Tex-Mex. Hilo town with all of its historical points of interest, color and famous for its friendly people is only about 45 minutes away and the ever changing Volcanoes National Park is about a 60 minute drive.

What to Pack:
The Island of Hawaii, aka the Big Island, boasts over 4,000 square miles and 10 different climate zones, within which are many micro climate zones! You may think that packing your favorite swimsuit and slippers (flip flops) is enough, but not true if you plan on doing any hiking or sightseeing around the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can get quite chilly with temperatures dropping down to the low 40's at night, sometimes lower, so do bring your favorite warm pajamas and at least a light jacket. It actually snows often on Mauna Kea, but they close those roads whenever there are blizzard conditions present. If you plan on doing a lava hike, you should consider bringing your hiking boots, as you’ll want good ankle support for this 1/2-day or more experience. At the very least, bring a solid pair of tennis shoes and don’t attempt the lava hike in flip flops.

Rates are for double occupancy. Add $25 per additional person, plus 14.416% Hawaii State taxes. Cleaning and other fees will also apply.

There is the potential for noise here. We just learned (12/1/17) that a neighbor has started building a new home nearby.

This home has some beautiful features, lots of outdoor space with gathering areas and a very "open air" feel. The floor plan is interesting-full bathroom in house not on the floor where the bedrooms are, and all bathrooms require going outside to get to them. In the house it is a deck, in the guesthouse, you walk from one building to another. The listing does not make it clear that you can rent just the house and not the guesthouse-an option we would have like to have had, as we did not need the 3 bedrooms and extra space. Also, there are screens missing from several windows and they are necessary due to the insects. Especially at night-insects like lights. A little TLC, some light bulb replacement/additions to stariwells and clearer description and this would be a 5 star home. This would be a great place to rent if you were with more than one family or a larger group. It affords group gatherings as well as privacy. Hawaii Life was easy to work with and very responsive. Lastly, this home is in a beautiful place but it is quite a way from Hilo-just know that and check mileage. All the roads have lower speed limits and travel about the island takes lots of time! We loved Uncle Roberts Awa on Wednesday evenings nearby as well as Yoga at Kaliani Resort and the hot pools in the area.
