Reviewed on 2024-04-01 by Matt M. , Bozeman, MT USMy wife and I couldn’t have been more pleased , pictures do not do it justice, the view from the patio looking out over the ocean was incredible, short walk to basically our own beach, maybe saw 10 people each day we went down. Nearby town was really nice with a store and you have to hit the fish market for the Ahi tacos, and the little bakery was incredible! Great location for exploring the North shore for sure. It was so nice to come back to our own little private piece of the island each night. We will be back.

Fantastic vacation home: quiet and romantic

- The home came with a cooler, chairs, and a beach umbrella. This was fantastic, but it should be noted in the home details so we don't bring our own. Furthermore, it would be nice to include a boogie board or basic snorkeling gear.
- The home was mostly well stocked - plenty of dish washer pods and paper towels as well as bleach and fabric softeners. However there was no laundry detergent or salt / pepper. Preferably these are stocked, but if not please specify.
- I'd suggest letting guests know they can drive most of the way to the beach - saves a lot of walking up hill!
- I thought some of the reservation charges were a bit scandalous. Please just keep it to a straight nightly rate, deposit, and cleaning fee.
Overall it was fantastic and I'd love to return.
I stayed here for a few nights as part of my honeymoon. Overall the house and property were fantastic. The view was stunning (I'm not sure why they don't advertise that sunsets are stunning from this property - I'd be happy to provide a photo I took). The kitchen was well stocked and the grill high quality (I did not notice they offered to stock the refrigerator for you - I wish I took them up on that). The beach was very nice and generally quiet. Here are some suggestions I have for improvements:
- It wasn't clear which gate to use or even which house was ours. Has potential but not worth the price in current condition
Reviewed on 2023-01-17 by Roxanne K. , West Fargo, ND USI was so excited about this rental based on the reviews and pictures. I was immediately disappointed when we drove up to the gate. There were overgrown bushes around the gate and the gate had broken plywood holding it in place-very different from other gates we drove past on the same road. At the house, I initially thought it couldn't be our rental because it looked like no one had been there for a long time. Overgrown plants, plant debris, old outdoor furniture, and an old umbrella laying in the trees. The house was similar and dated. Old shades and furnishings and peeling wallpaper with a hole in the wall. Once we opened up the doors and shades, it felt a little better. Very secluded and lots of light from the windows and views of the ocean. Grill was dated, but usable. I wish the outdoor space was better because the view was amazing. Old chairs and no shade made the outdoor space almost unusable during the day. The hot tub was in good condition and that was wonderful at night to watch the stars. We took the LONG path to the ocean and the beach was amazing. Be prepared to do some hiking and climbing to get there though! Waves were unreal and whales were breaching. Not swimmable, but the beach was very relaxing and we enjoying sitting there. I loved the size of the home and location. It just needs simple cosmetic updates and a good cleanup outdoors to make it more appealing. Do the updates and add an infinity pool and I would live there forever!! I would recommend this property only if updates and changes are made. Not worth the price at all in this condition.

The cottage itself is nice, it has some wear for sure. Things like window coverings that are busted, and don't provide room darkness, torn wallpaper etc...though this shouldn't keep you from renting as the property itself is worth it. Reviewed on 2021-05-20 by , Franklin, TN United StatesHuge Improvements - the Air Conditioner is a very very welcome addition. We would get the living room comfortable and the bedroom as well, with the fans set up to blow the cool are in. In previous years it's been miserably hot at times, but the property is so amazing you put up with it.
Some new drawbacks - maybe because we just came through Covid, elements on the property were looking rough. The other gate was broken so everyone used the gate right by the house.
One of the best aspects of the property before was privacy. It felt like you had the island to yourself. For the most part, that's gone. The trees and bushes between the two houses are gone and there is a huge new complex to the left of the other property. Not a ton of privacy anymore.
The beach is still amazing and one of the most scenic beaches I've ever been to.
I would really like to stay here again but will seek out a property that's more like the two of these used to be. If no luck, we would stay here again.
For what it's worth, we liked the layout of the other property better than this one.
We have stayed at this property's sister property several times.
Huge Improvements - the Air Conditioner is a very very welcome addition. Just short of perfection
Reviewed on 2019-08-26 by , Phoenix, AZ United StatesLesson learned, however, to carefully read the listing descriptions. This property does not have air conditioning, save for a small unit in the bedroom that really only works in the evening and allows you to sleep. Outside temps were in the high 80s, and due to the lack of ac and direct sunlight all day long, the rental is nearly unusable from 11am - 8pm. If there was shade, it would have been a bit better, but the rental has zero shade, and it just bakes. Additionally, since it was so hot, we had to leave the doors open all day long to hope for a breeze, which left the place unsecure if we needed to leave the property. There is a small safe, but security becomes an issue due to the lack of AC. For a luxury rental at this price point, not having AC is a huge miss. As special as this place is, I wouldn't be able to rent here again unless they install mini-splits that appropriately cool the place.
Also, there is a video camera posted directly above the front door. Mixed feelings here, I understand the owner wanting some security, but for a private villa where you're truly trying to get away, it's presence changed our comfort level.
The general condition of the property is nice, although it needs some work...wallpaper is peeling off the walls in places, there was a leaky shower and bathroom faucet, and the hot water heater only provides about 5 minutes of hot shower water before running out.
The bed is very comfortable, and the place has everything you'd need. The outdoor shower is a really cool touch. And the rental company is super communicative, and were there to help make our stay enjoyable despite the frustrations.
I want to love this place, and if some small things are addressed, would definitely come back.

Kauai Small Home
Reviewed on 2019-06-20 by , Seattle, WA United StatesPictures are accurate. The good: location wonderful, little town of Kilauea was wonderful, Hanalei great and 15-20 minutes, Secret Beach was short walk down a path which was adequately maintained and is a wonderful beach, views were tremendous. The bad: the home does not have A/C (there is a portable A/C unit in the bedroom which kind of cools it), it was oppressively hot and muggy upon our arrival, we asked that the property manager move an additional A/C unit for the main space from the adjacent home (we knew they managed both and the other was vacant as we had looked at both and checked while we were there), we were told they were too busy and it will cool down, they were right, but it took a full day and a half of our planned 3 day stay, we ended up sleeping with some of the lights on to keep the cockroaches at bay, lights went out and the cockroaches came out - and these were serious, like the size of a big toe.

Reviewed on 2019-02-26 by Jamie C. , Sammamish, WA United StatesThe disappointments...
Generally, the cottage was clean but more attention to detail (some dirty dishes, floor stains, dusty) would go a long way. The condition of the furniture (couches, chairs, outdoor furniture) were worn out and need replacement. Some minor annoyances... no dish soap, one box of tissue, a couple of rolls of TP, laundry detergent for one load, no second set of linens. Inadequate for one-week stay.
Management was good on most things but failed to arrange for bikes to be at the cottage after confirming twice.. And they should have checked in with us after there was a semi-hurricane. To see if we were ok and if there was any damage. The storm left the grounds a mess which we had to deal with on our own.
Overall, because of the location and privacy, we would stay there again. And because to fix the disappointments, it would take very little. Spend a few thousands of dollars to replace some furniture and make sure management inspects the property after each cleaning. That would do it.

Unfortunately, I would not recommend this rental to anyone. For the record, my wife and I are not tough graders but we were really not pleased with this villa on our honeymoon. First off, the place is a SAUNA with no AC. When we entered for the first time, it was close to 90+ degrees. If you cannot sleep in heat then this is not the place for you. Second, when we arrived, we plugged in the fans and the circuit failed. In the middle of the night, I had to go out and find the circuit breaker and flip it on. There were a couple more things that were very unpleasant about the place. The bird poop is literally out of control and is everywhere on the outside of the property. On top of that , when we arrived, the lawn was overgrown. Lastly, the online instructions were completely wrong and outdated. The wifi network and password that are provided online are nonexistent (the manual inside the villa has the correct wifi info). The safe inside the villa is broken and does not work as well.

Lastly, the positives. Incredible view and only a few minutes to Secret Beach which is incredible. Reviewed on 2018-03-28 by Kirsten M. , Washington, DC United StatesThe only reason I don't give the property 5 full stars is because of a few minor annoyances: the ceiling fan broke in the bedroom one night and it really was too hot to sleep without it (but it was fixed the next day), there was a hornets nest clear as day on the side of the house. Not sure why it hadn't been removed. Luckily, we were not stung, but we did have "company" during breakfast most mornings. Finally, and this was probably the biggest issue, there was construction at the property next door that began early in the morning -- sawing, banging, loud talking -- which was topped off by really loud rap music that killed any sense of serenity at Hale Nanea, which we mostly were able to drown out with our own music...but, resort would have booked you without a warning there would be construction.
Overall, I'd return to Hale Nanea any day. The positives far outweighed the negatives. Thanks for a great stay.
Hale Nanea is perfect for anyone looking to get away from it all. The property itself is gorgeous and very well appointed. We really loved the outdoor shower, jacuzzi, and used the grill 5/7 nights there. You could mostly enjoy the outdoor seating areas in the morning when the mosquitoes aren't out in full force and the sun is behind the house. In the afternoon and evenings, the lanai is flooded with sunlight--and gets quite hot--and the bugs start to come out. We enjoyed our happy hours and sunsets on the beach instead--can't really complain. The walk to the beach isn't for everyone--several hundred yards down a steep hill then cliff, which was fine for us but I couldn't imagine my parents, who are in their 60s, doing it everyday, sometimes twice or more a day. That said, once you get to the beach, there really is no better spot on the North Shore. Quiet. Secluded. Hike the lava rocks to a little waterfall. The waves are better too (albeit a bit dangerous).

The only reason I don't give the property 5 full stars is because of a few minor annoyances: the ceiling fan broke in the bedroom one night and it really was too hot to sleep without it (but it was fixed the next day), there was a hornets nest clear as day on the side of the house. We had a rare thunderstorm one evening which cooled everything down and was lovely. Secret Hideaway Beach down below the property became "our" beach and rarely had more than a dozen people. Reviewed on 2017-09-06 by , Forney, TX United StatesThe cottage is small but perfect for two people. Very high end appliances and the water pressure was EXCELLENT! Knock-the-freckles-off kind of pressure - awesome! Outdoor shower was a dream. The heat was oppressive during August, and the ceiling fans and a little standing fan didn't help much unfortunately. We had a rare thunderstorm one evening which cooled everything down and was lovely. Secret Hideaway Beach down below the property became "our" beach and rarely had more than a dozen people. Secluded property and away from lights so the stars felt almost close enough to touch. Booking through Hawaii Life was easy-breezy. Arrival procedures were seamless and all was in perfect condition. Will book again with Hawaii Life.

Paradise
Reviewed on 2016-10-17 by Deborah N. , Sherman Oaks, CA United StatesI am almost hesitant to write such a glowing review because I want to keep this place a secret. The property is private, luxurious, beautiful and well-equipped. Honestly, it had everything we needed. Of course, everything could always be improved and my only suggestions would be to have some type of bluetooth speaker on hand, yoga mats, and to plant a few fruit trees on the vast property. But then we probably would have refused to leave. We can't wait to go back.

Quiet and secluded getaway
Reviewed on 2016-06-27 by , Angleton, TX United StatesWe spent a week at the little cottage and found it to be set in a peaceful and quiet area. The view is beautiful and we enjoyed watching the Nenes (Hawaiian geese) in the yard. The cottage itself is very nice, but could have been a bit cleaner for the price we paid. The trek down to Secrets Beach was tough, but well worth the effort. The beach is beautiful and not populated. The lighthouse is off to the right and makes for a picturesque view. We would definitely recommend staying in the North Shores area of Kauai. It's a beautiful island and this end is the best.

Perfect Kauai experience
Reviewed on 2016-04-05 by Paul F. , United StatesThis house is the perfect Kauai experience on the North shore. Secluded and upscale with an incredible beach and 2 minute drive from great restaurants. No air conditioning was actually a blessing. Trade winds kept the house comfortable and cool at night. Nothing better than the sound of a Kauai thunderstorm at night. Definitely recommend this rental.

Well managed isolation
Reviewed on 2015-01-03 by , Santa Rosa, CA United StatesWe loved the feeling of seclusion, the layout and gardening makes it feel much further from roads and neighbors than it really is. It felt like a nice little home just outside the sleepy town of Kilaeua.
We loved the grounds very beautiful scenery for those times when we were at the property instead of out adventuring. It made for lovely mornings reading and sipping coffee while listening to the (huge) waves hitting the nearby beach.
I'd recommend this property for anyone looking for this sort of laid-back and (semi) self-managed Kauai experience.
Our stay at this property was precisely what I'd hoped it would be. We were looking for something nice and relatively high-end, but not something in a Mega-Resortopolis which we feel runs counter to the laid back Kauai vibe.
We loved the feeling of seclusion, the layout and gardening makes it feel much further from roads and neighbors than it really is. Great place with some maintenance needs
Reviewed on 2014-05-28 by Jenny A. , Woodside, CA United StatesWe really loved this home. Great views, private, and clean. We really enjoyed the gardens and expansive property with fruit trees, coconuts, and direct access to Secret Beach. Our only complaint was that a few things were not working very well. The dishwasher did not clean dishes and we ended up using it as a drying rack for hand washing. The ice maker in the freezer was broken so we bought bags of ice. There's also no AC (which we preferred) and the TV was in an odd location due to the small size of the room. Overall a great place with some minor improvements.

Reviewed on 2014-05-02 by Mary Kaye J. , Sammamish, WA United StatesThe gardens were not well maintained and the ponds to the rear of the house were full of bullfrogs that croaked from 5 p.m. to early morning. Other than this is was a peaceful place and we enjoyed having the view of the ocean across the expansive lawn. Understand the property has sold and there may be houses built on the view side, which may obscure the view from the cottage.
Being a gated single residence, we thought we would have privacy. However, one day a truck pulled in front of the place and two guys were looking at the exterior from the yard. Then another morning around 8:30 the hot tub maintenance guy walked right by the glass doors to the shower. No one called ahead of time to see if they could enter. We had no problem with people coming onto the property, but really did not like them coming without our knowing ahead of time.

The gardens were not well maintained and the ponds to the rear of the house were full of bullfrogs that croaked from 5 p.m. to early morning. our stay in Kauai
Reviewed on 2014-01-24 by Chris A. , Los Angeles, CA United StatesIt was simple and perfect and a true escape and return back to center. The location was pure paradise. The only thing not perfect was the jacuzzi in the back of the little house was a little smelly and scuzzy and unusable..... but we most likely would not have used it anyway. the proximity to great food at common grounds and the secrets beach and the healthy food store and the walk down to the beach were second to none. Every morning we'd wake up and say "welcome to the first day of earth!" one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. the "bungalow was everything we needed and the acres of land it sits on is pure heaven.
Perfect for a secluded getaway
Reviewed on 2013-09-01 by Kirsten M. , Washington, DC United StatesThe only reason I don't give the property 5 full stars is because of a few minor annoyances: the ceiling fan broke in the bedroom one night and it really was too hot to sleep without it (but it was fixed the next day), there was a hornets nest clear as day on the side of the house.
