The small town of Ookala sits at about 371 feet above sea level on the Big Island’s northeast coast and is home to about 200 people. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the blue Pacific, Ookala is one of the many charming, small towns along the scenic Hamakua Heritage Corridor Drive from Hilo to Waipio Valley.
Ookala has some bed and breakfast accommodations but no hotels or resorts. Along the coast is the spacious Ookala Park. Ookala is located about four miles from Laupahoehoe along the Mamalahoa Hwy. (Hwy. 19) on the scenic Hamakua Coast between Honokaa and Laupahoehoe.
