Beaches Big Island

Locally known as “Maks,” Makalawena Beach is actually three crescent-shaped beaches along 3/4-mile of the Kona coastline. If you’re looking for a great beach off the beaten path, pencil in a visit. This beach is accessed by a dirt trail that gently slopes downward, about a 20 minute walk, rewarding you with seclusion and gorgeous views the further down the beach you wander.

Explore the inviting waters with your snorkel and mask to find an impressive variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. The shallow water coral reef just offshore of the center crescent beach is great for snorkeling, with colorful coral, caves, and sea arches. A perfect beach for relaxing with your toes in the sand, Makalawena Beach is for those wanting to stray away from the crowds and utilize their sense of adventure.
