"Un-Leashing Joy: The Unique Kauai Pets Field Trip Program"

Experience the joy of spending time with "dogs in Hawaii" through an innovative program offered by the Kauai Humane Society. The program, known as "Shelter Dogs on Field Trips," allows you to borrow a shelter dog for an outing, and it's absolutely free! This unique opportunity is available every day except Sundays at the Lihue shelter.

This program is a fantastic opportunity for both the visitor and the dog. As a vacationer, you get to enjoy the company of a furry friend, while the dog gets to experience an exciting outdoor adventure. Most of Kauai's beaches and trailheads welcome dogs, with the exception of county-maintained parks and beaches. However, it's important to note that dogs must be leashed at all times and are not allowed in dog parks.

Here are some recommended dog-friendly places to visit in Hawaii:
- Maha`ulepu Beach, Poipu
- Kalapaki Beach, Lihue
- Sleeping Giant, Wailua
- Moalepe Trail, Wailua
- Wailua Arboretum, Wailua
- Koke`e State Park/Waimea Canyon

While the primary goal of this program is to keep the "dogs in Hawaii" healthy and socialized, it's not uncommon for visitors to fall head over heels for their 'field trip' dog and decide to adopt. On average, the shelter sees about four adoptions per month by visiting guests. They even assist with the relocation process, resulting in Hawaiian dogs finding new homes all across the country! It's a truly remarkable program for dog lovers.
