While some believe that it is perpetually summertime here on the islands, we do experience a slight season change, reflected in both the air and the ocean. This can come as a surprise to many visitors who envisioned lounging on a sunny beach and floating around in crystal clear water. But alas, with winter comes waves along with cooler days and nights. The islands certainly aren’t any less beautiful, but you may need to get a little more creative when it comes to filling your days. We thought we would share with you then, our recommended top 3 activities to do in the wintertime while on vacation.
Go Surfing!
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced ripper, there are plenty of surf breaks for all levels. Surfing and stand-up paddle boarding are good fun and good for you. If you are new to the sport, a private or group lesson can be arranged with a local pro. If wave riding is old hat to you, vendors and surf shops offer daily and weekly board rentals that can be delivered to the beach or your rental home.
Get Off-Road!
All-terrain vehicle tours take you off the beaten path to parts of the island that are inaccessible to everyone else. Traverse beachside cliffs, ranches, and valley while learning the history and use of the land. Most tours stop for a picnic lunch, often times at a swimming hole. If you don’t feel confident enough to operate your own off-road vehicle, you can always ride along with a guide. This is an exciting adventure that is even more fun when it is wet and muddy from wintertime weather!
Witness Whales!
The warm Hawaiian waters are the breeding and birthing ground for humpback whales migrating from Alaska each year. To get up close to a whale and see them in their natural habitat is an experience that will change your life…and the only way to do that is by boat! There are several companies offering whale watching excursions from zodiacs to 65-foot sailing catamarans, with many of the boats equipped with special microphones that they lower into the water so you can hear the whales calling out to each other.
