To help give you a jump start, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best things to do in Hilo.

7 Things to Do or See in Hilo

Located on the northeastern side of the island, Hilo was once a bustling farming and fishing area. Today, it has charming shops, incredible museums, and fascinating attractions. You can explore Hilo on your own or on guided tours; both will surely leave you with long-lasting memories.

  1. Give yourself plenty of time to visit Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. While technically found outside of Hilo, it’s only about a 40-minute drive, making it a great day trip option. Get an up-close look at the volcanic terrain on a hike, or drive on Crater Rim Drive or Chain of Craters Road.

  1. Take in views of the Big Island from the sky on an outing with Paradise Helicopters. There are several excursions, including ones that take you over the rainforest, lava fields, or valleys. Prices vary based on the tour. Another excellent option is Safari Helicopters.

  1. Another great way to explore Hilo is from the water. Hilo Ocean Adventures offers several aquatic adventures, such as waterfall cruises, whale-watching tours, scuba diving, and snorkeling.

  1. Shop for fresh ingredients at the Hilo Farmers Market. Open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Hilo, the market has Big Market Days on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

  1. Surround yourself with stunning scenery by visiting natural attractions. Take in views of Waiānuenue (Rainbow Falls) on a visit to Wailuku River State Park. Walk along pagodas and colorful flora at The Liliʻuokalani Gardens.

  1. Say hello to the animals that call the Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo home. When planning your visit to this free attraction, be sure to take a look at the animal encounter schedule to see when you can enjoy a more hands-on visit.

  1. Learn about marine conservation at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center. Between the 3,500-gallon aquarium, lifesize models of Northwestern Hawaiian Islands wildlife, and interactive exhibits, there’s something to see everywhere you turn.
