Hawaii Homeowner Guide: Top Tips for  Accommodating Athletes & Outdoor Enthusiasts

Fall is here, and in Hawai’i that means we look forward to welcoming athletes and adventure seekers who will tackle some of the world’s most renowned races, challenging trails, and massive waves before the end of the year!

Many come to compete or explore, and stay to relax, often island hopping to make the most of their trek from home to Hawai’i! Here’s what you need to know about how to accommodate athletes and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world with the amenities they need.

Amenities to Accommodate Triathletes

Hawai’i Island is hosting the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona and they’ll need all the support they can muster to swim, bike, and run 140.6 grueling miles. It’s common for these professional and age-group triathletes to bring their family and friends with them to cheer, and of course, enjoy a Hawai’i vacation.

Accommodate the world’s top triathletes and their entourage by upgrading your couch to a sofa sleeper, so they can bring an extra sherpa or two. These athletes will most likely be preparing their own healthy meals and snacks, so if your vacation rental’s kitchen doesn’t have a juicer already, it may be time to invest in a VitaMix.

Consider providing locks for the carbon fiber bikes that triathletes often fly in for the race. You may even want to leave a handwritten card wishing any competitors staying at your property a good race!

Extras to Attract Big Wave Surfers

Oahu’s North Shore comes to life in November with the arrival of the winter’s massive swells. The best surfers from across the globe aren’t far behind, ready to take on the world’s most legendary waves at some of the most thrilling surf competitions around. Beginning on Nov. 26th and running through Dec. 7th, the North Shore welcomes the last event in the World Surf League’s Challenger Series, the Haleiwa Challenger, to the island. Since the North Shore has managed to resist mass development, many athletes will be seeking a vacation rental to book while in town.

Oahu isn’t the only island getting action offshore. Beginning on Nov. 1st, Maui’s North Shore will also be a hot spot for surfers looking to take on Jaws. The big wave surfing break at Peʻahi will become a mecca for surfers participating in the Jaws Big Wave Challenge. As the event runs until March 31st, 2023, many competitors will be looking for long-term rentals in the nearby area.

Whether your rental is within walking distance of Jaws or down the street from Haleiwa, you can attract surfers flocking to Hawaii’s shores with extras that will go a long way. Most surfing competitions are held at sites that have little to no food available for purchase. Make it easy for them to pack snacks and lunches for the day by having a cooler or two available.

Shade can also be limited at these competitions, so stock your rental with beach chairs and a beach umbrella that’s light enough to carry. Binoculars are another amenity that will be appreciated by guests who want to scope out the big wave action, which may very well be a few hundred yards offshore.

Details to Delight Distance Runners

Runners from every corner of the world will take to the streets of Oahu on Dec. 11th for the Honolulu Marathon. Despite the many hotel options available to them downtown, many of these marathoners prefer to stay at a vacation rental where they can rest before the race, escape the crowds, and prepare their own food.

Hosts who want to help them be ready for their 26.2-mile journey can create an environment that is calm, motivating, and stocked with everything runners need. Runners will notice the little details, like a bowl of fresh fruit in the kitchen and a few bottles of water chilling in the fridge.

The marathon starts before the crack of dawn, at 5 a.m. Help your guests fall asleep early and get a good night’s sleep with blackout shades and noise-canceling headphones. And if your rental doesn’t have a K-cup coffee maker, this is the perfect excuse to upgrade. Runners will be grateful to have quality coffee, almost instantly, on race morning.

Accommodations for an Outdoor Enthusiast’s Adventures

From trekking to the lava lake in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, hiking Waimea Canyon on Kauai, mountain biking in Keokea on Maui, and zip lining at Coral Crater on Oahu, each island has its own unique adventures in store. No matter what time of year hikers and outdoor enthusiasts visit Hawai’i, they’ll be looking for a vacation rental that will be the perfect home base for all their adventures.

Adventure seekers will certainly put extra towels, reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, and antibacterial hand wipes to good use. Accommodate them before and after their adventures by having guidebooks, trail maps, and recommendations for local bike routes and running paths on hand. And to really make a lasting impression, consider hanging up a framed piece of art with a motivational quote in your vacation rental.
