A day trip to Kokee State Park & Kalalau Lookout on the west side of Kauai is an experience loved by visitors and locals alike! Located 3,200 - 4,200 feet above sea level, Kokee State Park offers a unique change of scenery from the rest of the island. Here you will find yourself surrounded by a forest of koa and ʻōhiʻa lehua trees as well as an abundance of native plants, flowers, and birds.
Offering picturesque canyon, mountain, and ocean views, a day trip to Kokee State Park & Kalalau Lookout will grant you the opportunity to see Kauai from a whole new perspective!
How to Make the Most Of Your Day:
Wherever your Hawaii Life Vacation rental is located we recommend starting your day early, and don’t forget the camera! The drive to Kokee State Park is an experience all its own. Quickly climbing in elevation, follow Highway 550 as it twists and turns up the mountainside. Watch the ocean below drift and views become more expansive as you continue your journey skyward.
This scenic drive is something to take seriously! Take your time and stop along the four designated lookouts for panoramic views of the canyons, waterfalls, mountains, and vast ocean.
Just past the Kokee History Museum and Lodge are two breathtaking lookouts you can’t miss! The famous Kalalau Lookout showcases views of the expansive valley and Napali Coastline cliffs dropping into the ocean. At the very end of the road, about a mile past the Kalalau Lookout, is the Pu’u O Kila lookout, offering more expansive views and insta-worthy photos of the famous Kalalau lookout. Hike along the ridge here to explore different vantage points. We recommend arriving early for better views before the clouds roll in and completely blanket the sky and valley!
After a morning of photoshoots, backtrack to the meadow to explore the Kokee Natural History Museum for souvenirs and information about the park and trails. Pack food for a picnic lunch in the grass, or check out the Kokee Lodge Restaurant. As always, be aware of the infamous Kauai chickens waiting to steal any food they can!
Although you could easily pass the entire day at the lookouts and meadow area, there are many beautiful hiking trails available for the adventure seeker as well! Be sure to plan ahead and choose the hiking trail best suited for your group before heading up the mountain. There are trails available for any level of hiker!
Important Things to Note:
- Be prepared for all types of weather, cooler temperatures, sunshine, or rain!
- Bring drinking water and snacks
- Don’t forget the camera
- There is no cell service or wifi in the park
- Always stay on designated trails
- Keep your distance from the edge of the cliff sides
