Hawaii is known across the globe for its beautiful beaches, luscious landscapes, tropical rain forests, arid deserts, and majestic mountains. But did you know, Hawaii is home to some amazingly delicious “superfoods” too?

Although superfoods don’t specifically have their own food group, this common term is used to describe nutrient-dense foods that contain a variety of potential health benefits! Superfoods can include such things as antioxidants, fiber, healthy fats, and phytochemicals to offer your body a buffet of natural nutrients.

Being consistently rated one of the healthiest states in the nation, check out how incorporating these “Hawaii Superfoods” could be beneficial to your health!

1. Spirulina

Spirulina is considered one of the original superfoods, dating back to being an important food source for the ancient Aztecs and Mayans. Spirulina is a species of seaweed belonging to the group of blue-green algae, It’s one of the most nutritious, concentrated whole food supplements and is used to boost energy and the immune system.

Spirulina grown in Hawaii is cultivated in manmade raceway ponds that mimic the environment that spirulina would naturally grow in. The long, warm sunny days produce a highly nutrient dense algae, full of vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin K, zeaxanthin, and other phytonutrients such as phycocyanin, GLA, and SOD. Most frequently used in powder or tablet form.

2. ‘Olena

More commonly known as turmeric, this plant was probably part of the few dozen plants brought to Hawaii by early Polynesians. ‘Olena is the Hawaiian word for yellow and the root was crushed and used as a dye by the early Hawaiians. It was also used medicinally because of its immune boosting and antibacterial qualities.

The main active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory effects and can be linked to destroying cancer cells & protects against radiation induced tumors, eliminating free radicals in the body, reduces inflammation making it an excellent medicine for arthritis, and can help moderate insulin levels. The root is most frequently used in cooking or in powder form. 

3. Noni

Noni is a tree that produces a small, white bumpy fruit, brought to Hawaii by the Polynesians. The noni fruit once ripe has an unpleasant smell that is hard to get used to, but it’s highly revered for its medicinal qualities. The fruit is crushed into a juice, which has been used as a remedy for many conditions in traditional Hawaiian culture.

Noni juice is full of antioxidants, which allow it to fight free radicals and inflammatory ailments like cancer, diabetes, and joint pains. These antioxidants also offer anti-aging benefits to the skin and hair.  

4. Acai Berry

The acai berry hails from South America and Central America and is locally known as the “fruit that cries.” The indigenous people of the Amazon have long used the acai berry for health-related reasons. These purple berries are loaded with antioxidants, good-for-you fats and amino acids, which help reduce inflammation, improve blood sugar control and are said to even have anti-aging benefits.

The majority of research regarding acai berry and health has been focused on investigating the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of acai berry. Consumption of antioxidants is thought to provide protection against oxidative damage, demonstrate anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity, among other positive health benefits. 5. Kola Nut

Kola nuts possess two percent of caffeine along with theobromine and kolanin which acts as a stimulant. Theobromine helps to promote cerebral circulation in the body. It is also present in chocolate that provides a feeling of alertness. This nut promotes the level of oxygen in the blood and also enhances concentration power by clearing the mind. It also assists in countering bacterial infections.
