Give Halloween a tropical twist this year with Pineapple Jack-O-Lanterns! With weird textures and bizarre hair-dos, pineapples are fun alternatives to pumpkin jack-o-lanterns. Although these tropical pumpkin counterparts only last a few days after being carved, there's still plenty of time to showcase your Hawaii-inspired Halloween creation.
Follow these easy steps below to try something new, and delicious, this spooky season!
Step 1: Find the perfect pineapple and cut off the stem
A slightly under ripe pineapple would be best for carving. Look for a fruit that is still slighty green with fresh leaves on top! Using a thin but sharp knife, cut straight across the top of the pineapple about half an inch below the green leaves on top.
Step 2: Core the Inside
If you have a pineapple corer, great! If not, you can use the knife to cut around the inside of the pineapple, leaving about a half inch of yellow around the inside. Score the fruit through the core to make it easier to remove.
Step 3. Scoop out the Insides
Use a large spoon to scoop out the inside fleshy pieces, and continue to scoop around the edges until you have a smooth thin layer all around. Be sure to safe the inside fruit for fruit salads, juice, or pina coladas!
Step 4. Carve your spooky creation
Cut out shapes for eyes, nose and mouth, be creative! Once you have created your jack-o-lantern inspired face or design, illuminate it from the inside with a tea light placed or a flameless candle.
